Chairman of the Kansas GOP, Kris Kobach, bragged about his voter caging efforts in an embarrassing email made available earlier in the week. Vote caging is an illegal trick to kick registered voters off the rolls, although executive director of the Kansas Republican Party said, “It’s just a term of art.” Like “ratfucking.”
The local newspaper’s article, Democrats accuse GOP of vote ‘caging’, drew the locals, including scenebooster and right_thinker. Bowhunter99 said “so… they find an invalid voter and challenge his/her vote… and this is illegal how/why? Or they find a registered voter and target him/her to get his vote… How is that illegal?” and Dollypawpaw added “If you are so stupid that you can't figure out where to vote, should you really be voting at all? Sounds like tossing ballots into a monkey house would get the same results.”
With all of this ignorance floating about, dirkleisure patiently explained voter caging:
Trouble is, they aren't looking for actual invalid voters. They are attempting to create invalid voters. Here's how: The KS GOP sends me a letter via registered mail. I refuse the letter, because anything from Christian Morgan and Kris Kobach is guaranteed to be full of lies. My refusal is used by the KS GOP as grounds that I am not actually living at that address. I show up to vote, a KS GOP poll worker challenges my right to vote. I am now told to either cast a provisional ballot or go home. Because my right to cast a legitimate vote has been questioned by an illegitimate tactic, this is a form of voter suppression.
Most of the counter responses consisted of the following argument: “[insert specific Democrats, the Democratic Party, or ACORN] engaged in voter fraud, therefore [blank].” The piece in the blank is often unstated. Therefore, we should ignore the present wrongdoing? Both parties are equally repulsive? It doesn’t matter. The tactic functions solely as a diversion tactic, or, in the words of dirkleisure “Hey, who cares what the KSGOP is doing, look over here!”
